The September 2021 Show:
These mixed media paintings and photographs suggest that everything we know is impermanent, erasable. History and facts are as subject to reorganization and interpretation as anything else. Language—our mode of transmitting knowledge—itself is not fixed: phonetics in language may reflect dialects or poetic, personal interpretations. My own memory of education and learning is on chalk boards, while scholars today may remember a luminescent glow of a screen. Many of the subjects of education remain stagnant, yet learning cannot be constant in a shifting, ever evolving world. Leslie Connito is a New York artist who works in various media, investigating concepts of time, memory, disintegration, permanence and impermanence. Her oil paintings reflect everyday life and often include snippets of culture, politics, history, music, art history, and the like, which are painted into the images in layers. She uses symbols as a kind of narrative in the oil paintings, mixed media work, and encaustics. All work is original work by the artist and may not be reproduced without permission from the artist.
